SPECIALISED transportation and logistics company Cargo Carriers has just announced a unique partnership contract with one of its long-standing clients, Industrial Urethanes, the market leading polyurethane manufacturer in the Chemserve group.

The logistics company has been moving bulk liquid urethanes on behalf of Industrial Urethanes since the latter company’s inception in 1983, including the specialised transport of the chemical compound MDI, a crucial component of refrigeration appliances and equipment. MDI is delicate and needs to be handled and transported with care and professionalism.

Previously, MDI had been transported in a specialised Isotainer owned by Industrial Urethanes. But the increased demand for the product, and the need to keep the equipment up to the necessary safety standards, has meant that the Isotainer is now too old and too small to handle current demand.

With the additional pressure on chemical companies and their transporters to be responsible for the environment, Cargo Carriers and Industrial Urethanes took the unique step of forming a joint steering committee, under the banner of the MDI project, to design and build a bespoke container for the transport of MDI to Industrial Urethanes’ clients around the country.
The vehicle that has emerged from the joint process is designed to the highest European safety standards, and has an additional 27% capacity compared to the old Isotainer.
Continuing the breakthrough theme of genuine collaboration between client and third party logistics provider, the new container carries the livery of both Cargo Carriers and Industrial Urethanes. For the SA market, the container is presently only 55% utilised, and can therefore handle any increased growth in the local market.

Concludes Cargo Carriers’ Project Manager on the MDI Project, Mark Quinn, “We are very excited by the spirit of the collaboration with which Industrial Urethanes has entered into this agreement with us. The fact that it is a contract for a period of five years also speaks about the confidence they have in us to do the job to the requisite safety and performance standards.”
