Hazardous cargo being carried

While new methods for water purification are constantly being explored, liquid chlorine internationally remains as the chemical most widely used in eliminating waterborne bacteria. This vital ingredient in the life-sustaining element is highly toxic when incorrectly handled. Transportation of liquid chlorine is therefore a task demanding expertise and experience.
JSE-listed supply chain and logistics management company Cargo Carriers has spent more than 12 years in transportation management of liquid chlorine. In order to transport this hazardous product, all the Cargo Carriers vehicles involved comply with stringent safety requirements as set out by the Health, Safety and Environmental Quality (HSEQ) principles and related laws. All vehicles and trailers transporting chemicals are fitted with Hazchem safety boards, transport emergency cards indicating product classification numbers and emergency contact numbers.

The company has over the years diversified from solely a transport role to that of a logistics and supply chain solution provider, and have integrated their solutions and systems into their customers supply chains in areas such as planning, warehousing, distribution and JIT deliveries, with specialised industry expertise. In the hazardous chemicals industry this expertise is especially necessary. All vehicles transporting chlorine are fitted with cranes, and specific cradles have been engineered and secured to the trailers. Compliance with HSEQ procedures and practices is a non-negotiable in the industry. In terms of its Safety and Quality Assurance (SQAS) audit, Cargo Carriers is ahead of the game. Along with its SQAS endorsement, Cargo Carriers is also a member of the Chemical and Allied Industries Association's Chemical Handling and Environmental and Responsible Care steering committee, which underlines the companies' high HSEQ compliance. The entire company is ISO9001:2000 and 14001 accredited.

All Cargo Carriers drivers involved in this operation have undergone extensive training in the transport of hazardous chemicals as well as in disaster management in the event of an emergency. Specifically relating to chlorine transportation, all vehicles are equipped with leak repair kits for any en-route emergency repairs to the drums and cylinders.
